You can always watch it again, as movies like this get better the second time. If you’ve already watched it, let me know if my review does justice to Vinil Mathew’s debut. Kudos to the creativity of the writers for making a seemingly simple story worth watching and I think that’s what Cinema is all about. Like all the conventional bollywood rom-coms, it lasts over 2 hours and by the time it reaches the penultimate minutes, you already know what’s gonna happen but not how. Other than Meeta (Parineeti’s character) being the center of the whole thing, some veteran actors (notably Manoj Joshi, Neena Kulkarni & Sameer Khakhar) deliver performances that completes the movie’s wholesome Indian family feel.

Maybe Vinil Mathew is not the correct person from whom I should expect art, not just a 135 minute long story. It is evident from the fact that I had a hard time finding some good shots to include in this review itself. The story being predominantly a rom-com shot on actual locations in Mumbai, the cinematography isn’t much impressive either. Sidharth Malhotra in Hasee Toh Phasee (2014)
HASEE TOH PHASEE REVIEWS MOVIE
Only Zehnaseeb and Ishq Bulaava are worth commending in a movie with 6 tracks. With Karan Johar in charge of the soundtracks and Shankar Ehsaan Loy rejecting the proposal, most songs are nothing but hiccups to the story breaking it’s flow, taking attention away from the emotionally active plot and standing out like jewel studded jutties would on casual jeans & t-shirt. Model-turned-actor Sidharth Malhotra also fits perfectly to a role where silent scenes and reactions are required from him many times while Parineeti leads the dialogues in her confident ways. Meticulously planned or just coincidence ? is left unto the viewer to decide. It is rare that a film move almost unidirectionally towards a better version of itself like this one does. There are no ‘last chances’, only ‘second-last’. Parineeti Chopra in Hasee Toh Phasee (2014) One would expect their interest to fade away but with plot by nature revolving around the protagonist played by Parineeti Chopra, her energy itself turns the movie into a sentimental joyride. The film starts off with an abrupt flow of time and a noticeably stereotypical portrayal of a smart and anxiety riddled introverted adolescent with many traits being taboo among general Indian populace. But little did I know, this hidden gem would make it’s way to my screen upon many recommendations taking opportunity of the house arrest situation we’re all in right now.

An Ad-filmmaker for years, Vinil Mathew debuted on the big screen with Hasee Toh Phasee in 2014 with production support from Phantom Films (notably Vikas Bahl and Anurag Kashyap) and Karan Johar.Īt first glance, the title seems so cliched that anybody looking for originality would’ve overlooked this in a heartbeat and so did I when it was released.
